The next meeting of Safety in Stumblers is on Monday 1 March 2010 between 7.30-9.00pm (*note new start time).......

Hi everyone,

The next meeting of Safety in Stumblers will take place on Monday 1 March 2010,  between 7.30-9.00pm , in the Library of Waxy O'Connors Bar, 44 West George Street, Glasgow, just next to Queen Street station. Please see the following website for directions:

http://www.waxyoconnors.co.uk/glasgow/index.asp

At this meeting we will be joined by Sonia Baliska a Psychology student at Strathclyde University who is looking for a couple of volunteers to help with her research into the effects of self-disclosure and non self-disclosure of stammering on listeners' perceptions of a person who stammers. In particular she is looking for two people who stammer to be recorded speaking in front of a video camera with one disclosing that they stammer at the beginning and the other not mentioning it at all. The recordings will then be shown to fluent people and they will asked to complete a questionnaire about how they felt during the experience (i.e. their perceptions of the people they have watched, the feelings they had etc).  The study that inspired Sonia was that of Healey, Gabel, Daniels and Kawai and ultimately she is keen to find out if a person's openness about stammering make listeners feel better about the stammering person as well as helping the person who stammers feel better about him/herself.

I look forward to seeing you there.

Regards

John
