Carolyn Allen of the University of Strathclyde would like to make a DVD containing samples of speech from adults who stammer for teaching purposes and is looking for people to be involved. Read more here... Dear All,

For those who I don't know, let me introduce myself...

I am Carolyn Allen and am a specialist Speech and Language Therapist who works part-time with adults who stammer in Glasgow. On the days that I am not a therapist, I am a lecturer, teaching our Speech and Language Therapists of the future at the University of Strathclyde. Unfortunately, the available hours for each class - adult stammering included - are being increasingly stretched and I am keen to develop resources that will complement and develop the students' learning from class.

As part of this, I would like to make a DVD containing samples of speech from adults who stammer and wonder if you would like to be involved? Below are key pieces of information about this:

*       The purpose of this DVD is to develop the students' skills at identifying and assessing stammering behaviours in speech. One sample would be used for demonstration and discussion in class with the DVD available for the students to borrow in their own time.
*       I hope to have 4 or 5 samples of speech, although if more people wish to be involved I will more than happily make a longer DVD.
*       Recording would take place in a soundproof booth in the Audio-Visual department, on the Jordanhill Campus. A member of the AV department will do the recording (although I will be present too) and later edit / professionally finish the DVD.
*       I would ask for around 5-10 minutes' worth of speech - this can be on a topic of your choosing, although I would be keen that some of the volunteers speak about their experiences of stammering so that the students appreciate the life impact of stammering as well as recognising the dysfluent features of speech.
*       It does not matter if you are using any therapy techniques to modify stammering during the speech sample as it is also useful for the students to hear these in practice.
*       Travelling expenses are paid to and from the campus.
*       You will be asked to sign a consent form to indicate that you are happy to participate in the recording.
*       The DVD will only be used for teaching purposes and students will only be able to watch the DVD in the department.

I work at the University on Mondays and Tuesdays and therefore would anticipate recording taking place on these days. However, recording times are otherwise fairly flexible at present. The teaching of this course begins in November so I would hope for the DVD to be finalized by mid October.

If you are interested in taking part, or have any questions about this please email me at Although I am only in the office at the beginning of the week, I do check my emails at other times and will aim to send a prompt reply. I will also be attending the meeting of Safety In Stumblers on the evening of 3 September 2007 and can answer any questions that you have in person.

I look forward to working with some of you soon,

Carolyn
